Green Cards

Latest news regarding issuing green cards for European Motor Travel.

The M.I.B (Motor Insurer’s Bureau) have now confirmed that the UK has re-joined the Green Card Free Circulation Area (GCFCA), which comprises all 30 European Economic Area (EEA) countries as well as Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia and Switzerland with effect from 2nd August 2021. This also applies to the Channel Islands. This means that green cards will no longer be legally required after this date unless driving a commercial vehicle which is essentially a return to the rules and procedures that were in effect before Brexit.

The M.I.B have recommended that Insurers continue to issue green cards for an extra month beyond that to manage the transition (for instance, to avoid the risk of individual border guards not being immediately aware that a UK or CI motorist no longer needs a green card) so at present, we will continue to issue green cards as normal up until 1st September 2021.

After this date, green cards are only required to be issued for commercial vehicles.
