How to Notify Us of a Death

Bereavement Support Guide

A customer meeting with an Islands Insurance advisor to get bereavement support and help with policies.

After a loss, there can be a lot to deal with, and insurance might feel like just one more thing on your list. We’re here to help you through it, step by step.

You don’t have to do everything today, and you don’t have to do it alone.

This Guide Explains How To:

What to do first

When you’re ready, let us know that someone has died. To start, all we need is:

  • The name of the person who died
  • Your name and how you’re related to them
  • The policy number (if you have it)
  • Whether there is a Will (if you know)
  • You don’t need to send any documents right now.

Who We Can Speak To

We can usually speak with:

  • A spouse or joint policyholder
  • Someone named in the Will (executor)
  • Someone acting for the estate (administrator)
  • A family member (if using small-estate rules in Jersey or Guernsey)
  • A legal representative or attorney

We’ll Find the Policies

We’ll check what policies the person had with us. Once we’ve done that, we’ll keep talking with you.

What Happens to the Policies?

Some policies stay active for now. For example:

  • Car insurance: If someone else is driving the car, we may need to update the main driver.
  • Home insurance: If the house is now empty, we may ask you to fill out a short form.
  • Other policies: We’ll explain what’s still in place and what can be changed.

What Documents You’ll Need

Don’t worry about picking the right form, we’ll tell you which one to use.

This depends on:

  • If there’s a Will
  • Where the person lived
  • How big the estate is

What Happens Next

We’ll help you:

  • Transfer policies to someone else
  • Cancel any policies no longer needed
  • Update any details
  • Get a refund (if one’s due)
  • We’ll also tell you what documents you’ll need to send us.

Documents You Might Need

We don’t need these straight away. Later on, we might ask for:

We may ask for:

  1. A death certificate
  2. Photo ID for the administrator or executor of the estate.
  3. A copy of the Will (if there is one).
  4. Probate documents (if needed).
  5. One of our forms. We’ll send the right one based on your situation:

Which form you might use

Your situation Form you might use
There is a Will and a letter of probate Return of Assets form
No Will and the immovable estate is under £30,000 (Jersey) Jersey Small Estate form
No Will and probate not required (Guernsey) Guernsey form

We can’t tell you whether probate is required, but we can explain what probate is and what we usually need from the estate.

FAQ’s

Have a question about your insurance policy?
We may have the answer already. See answers to our most frequently asked questions below.

Do I always need probate to deal with an insurance policy after someone has died?

Not always. It depends on whether there is a Will, the size of the estate, and which island the person lived in. We can explain what probate is and what we usually need, but we can’t tell you whether probate is required.

What if I don’t have the policy number for the person who’s died?

That’s okay. Just give us their name and date of birth, and we’ll do our best to find the policy.

Do insurance policies stay active after someone has died?

Yes, most policies will usually stay in place while the estate is being dealt with. If anything needs to change or a policy needs to be cancelled, we’ll always let you know first.

What happens to the home insurance if the property is empty after someone has died?

Please tell us if the property is empty. We may ask you to fill in a short form so we can check what cover is needed.

Can we transfer a car or motor policy after someone dies, without probate?

Yes, sometimes. If the vehicle was jointly owned, we may be able to update the existing policy. If not, we can usually set up a new policy in the new owner’s name.
