Why you need to consider hotel / guesthouse insurance

Every hotel or guesthouse is different, so the policy that’s right for you needs to be equally unique. At Islands, we’ll take the time to get to know your business and work closely with you to ensure you have the appropriate insurance cover in place to suit the needs of your business and that will protect it should the worst happen. It will also give your customers peace of mind and reinforce your trusted reputation within your business sector.

Not having the appropriate insurance cover in place can only put your business and income at risk. It can also interfere with your participation in relevant industry events – such as trade shows and job fairs – and become a hindrance when a customer wants the reassurance of proof of insurance. More importantly, when you’re looking at recruiting, proof of insurance can ensure your trusted reputation carries over into protection for your employees.

At Islands, our professional team is here to help give you the protection you need, so give us a call today.

Covers & benefits provided

Our policy for guesthouses and hotels is extensive and designed with Channel Islanders in mind.

Buildings & Tenants Improvements

Whether you own or rent the buildings you need to consider insurance not just for the bricks and mortar of the property but also any internal improvements you have made, such as installing a new kitchen or bathrooms. Any external outbuilding, swimming pools, driveways, walls etc. also need to be taken into consideration when insuring the premises for their full rebuilding costs (including professional fees and the cost of site clearance).

Business Interruption

If you cannot operate following an insured event such as fire, flood or storm damage then this is a massive risk to the business. Ensure you have adequate business interruption cover which will allow you to pay outgoings such as rent, wages & overheads as well as keeping the business running until you can reopen. Cover can also be extended if your main supplier has damage to their premises, failure of public utilities or prevented access to your premises that affects your business.

Employers Liability

If you employ staff, then not only is this a legal requirement, but you have the responsibility to ensure your staff are adequately covered for their daily roles within the business. This can include injury, illness, or legal action against your business. All our policies provide £10,000,000 of Employers Liability cover as standard.

Public / Products Liability

Coverage of third party injury and property damage on your premises. Whether this is in respect of the premises themselves, or a guest that becomes ill from eating your food or a drink that you sold. This is included as standard (at variable limits ranging from £2,000,000 to £10,000,000) within all our policies.

Contents & Business Equipment

It’s important to cover all of your general contents - specialist kitchen equipment, stoves, fridges/freezers, electronic equipment, laptops and mobiles - inside and away from the premises. Computer breakdown and reinstatement of data cover is also worth considering in the event of a loss.

Engineering Insurance & Inspection

Coverage can include a coffee machine or a hot water boiler that is pressurised by steam, or if the property has a lift that needs to be inspected annually to comply with Health & Safety obligations. Cover can also be extended to include machinery breakdown cover.

Guest Personal Effects

Cover your guest belongings whilst they are staying with you. Accidents do happen and it’s important to make sure you are covered for them.

Stock

Cover needs to take into account not just your general stock but also seasonal increases, wine, spirits and frozen foods.

Loss of License

Optional cover for loss of liquor license can be included across most policies.

Standard Coverage

Your policy will generally cover you for a number of insured events, such as:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Explosion
  • Earthquake
  • Flood
  • Storm
  • Malicious Damage
  • Theft
  • Accidental Damage
